Freemasons Raise over $86,000 for Children Hospital

The Blue Angel Restaurant celebrated its 50th Anniversary on 25-Jan-11 with a Gala Dinner and the largest bottle of French Champagne (30 litre) ever to come south of the Equator.   VWBro Marcello Marcobello PDGIW, proprietor, wanted this spectacular occasion to raise funds on behalf of Freemasons for the benefit of Westmead Children’s Hospital Oncology Department.  The MC was Paul Nicolaou who also assisted John Mangos with the Auction.  Guests included the GM & Judith Morrice, GDC Antoine Georges & Margarita, Giovanna Toppi of Machiavelli Restaurant, John Singleton & Yvette Hartman, many freemasons and luminaries from the Restaurant and Supply industries.

Guests were welcomed by a lone Scottish Piper who played his pipes outside the Restaurant which was suitably draped with Australian Flags in honour of Australia Day the next day..  Inside a large ice-carving of the Blue Angel, illuminated by concealed blue LED lamps,  sat on top of one of the huge lobster tanks and beamed at those arriving.

The seven course meal included Wagyu Bresaola, Misto Crudo (with Lobster Carpaccio, Sashimi, Oysters, Prawns, etc), Risotto with Scampi, Wagyu Tournedos Rossini, 4-5Kg Lobsters Bella Vista and Celebration Cake with Coffee.  There was a magnificent “Pop” when the cork of the Drappier Carte d’Or Brut Melchisadech was removed and a real challenge when pouring the contents.  Appropriate wines also accompanied the meal.

Masonic symbols decorated the huge birthday cake which was cut with an Officer’s Sword presented to Marcello by Chef Luca.

One of Kostya Tszyu’s signed boxing Gloves, Dinner for 6 at the Blue Angel, valued at $1,000, a 15 litre bottle of Veuve Clicquot , a 3 litre bottle of Crystal and a 1969 bottle of Dom Pérignon Champagnes were skilfully auctioned by John Mangos and Paul Nicolaou with wonderful John Singleton leading the bidding war.

All the 186 guests were thoroughly delighted and some were even overwhelmed by the whole evening, some left as early as 1:00am whilst others stayed till after 3:00.  We are looking forward to our next visit to the Blue Angel.
